Chief Credit Officer (CCO) For a Credit Union

Our client is seeking a high-caliber Chief Credit Officer to lead their credit operations and risk management strategy. This is a critical executive leadership role responsible for maintaining the safety and soundness of the institution’s loan portfolio while fostering a culture of disciplined, high-quality growth.

The Opportunity:

Compensation: Generous base salary up to $215,000.

Location: This is an on-site leadership position (not remote).


This is a critical executive leadership role responsible for maintaining the safety and soundness of the institution’s loan portfolio while fostering a culture of disciplined, high-quality growth.

Executive Responsibilities

As the CCO, you will own the loan risk management lifecycle, ensuring that underwriting practices remain robust and compliant in an ever-shifting economic landscape.

Portfolio Strategy & Risk Mitigation

  • Policy Stewardship: Maintain and evolve loan policies and procedures to ensure adherence to underwriting best practices, laws, and regulations.
  • Risk Oversight: Monitor quality control and conduct stress tests to minimize losses and ensure the integrity of the bank’s loan risk management process.
  • Regulatory Intelligence: Stay ahead of banking regulatory changes and economic trends; provide critical updates to the Board and executive team to ensure policies remain appropriate for changing conditions.
  • Board Reporting: Inform the President, Board of Directors, and Loan Committee of any material considerations affecting the portfolio.

Operational Leadership

  • Loan Review & Approval: Review all loans prior to External Loan Committee meetings, oversee the development of loan packets, and manage impairment analysis.
  • Audit & Compliance: Ensure all loans are properly documented for covenant compliance; oversee annual large loan reviews and the annual review of the master loan policy.
  • Crisis Readiness: Maintain current employee information within the Disaster Recovery Plan and lead loan review training.

Team Development

  • Internal Training: Develop and oversee the internal credit training program, working with both internal staff and external resources.
  • Mentorship: Use strong management practices to hire, coach, and develop a high-performing credit team, ensuring the department remains appropriately staffed.

Candidate Requirements

We are looking for a seasoned credit professional who views a job title as a starting point, not a ceiling.

  • Experience: 10+ years of related experience in financial/credit analysis and lending.
  • Leadership: Proven management experience is required; must have the ability to lead, train, and develop a professional credit team.
  • C&I Expertise: Heavy experience with Commercial & Industrial (C&I) lending is required. * Specialized Knowledge: Proficiency in loan workouts and SBA lending is preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (BA) or equivalent from a 4-year institution.
    • Completion of a formal bank management executive school or a financial industry-related advanced degree is a significant plus.
  • Communication: Exceptional ability to create and analyze credit presentations, loan policies, and business correspondence. Must be adept at interpreting complex technical procedures and government regulations.
